Marseille manager Bruno Genesio has linked Igor Paixão's slow start to the season to the winger's lingering disappointment over a failed summer move to Sunderland. The 26-year-old Brazilian, who scored 12 goals last term, has only one assist in six appearances this campaign.

Genesio said the forward is still processing the frustration of the collapsed transfer. "As you know, Igor could have, and should have, gone to Sunderland, but it didn’t happen for various reasons," the Marseille boss said. "Perhaps he hasn’t quite come to terms with that frustration yet."

Sunderland, who sit 17th in the Premier League with four points from six games, were seeking extra width ahead of their Europa League campaign. Paixão ultimately stayed in France, telling Brazilian outlet Band he chose to remain and help his team. "It’s also a dream to play in the Premier League," he said. "There’s a better chance I will leave next summer."

While the Black Cats focus on their own fixtures, starting with a trip to 18th-placed Bournemouth, Paixão's situation remains one for the future. Sunderland's recruitment team will be watching his progress, with the club's current squad aiming to climb the standings after a run of two wins in their last five matches.
