Sunderland AFC Women has been acquired by Bay Collective, with the multi-club owners receiving formal approval from WSL Football.
What happened?
Bay Collective, who also oversee American club Bay FC, acquired a majority stake in Sunderland AFC Women. The club finished eighth in the Women's Super League 2, but Bay Collective chief Kay Cossington hopes to compete with the best in the world.
Why it matters for Sunderland
Sunderland CEO Tom Burwell believes the club's ambitions were met by Bay Collective when they first held conversations in October 2025. The northeast region is important for women's football, and Bay Collective hopes to rebuild its success in the game. Local rivals Newcastle United have been boosted by investment from the Public Investment Fund (PIF) of Saudi Arabia in recent years.
What comes next?
Cossington says the club has been at the top of the women's game before and can be again. The list of talented players from the area is endless, including Lucy Bronze, Jill Scott, and Steph Houghton. Sunderland aims to bring back those days and compete with the very best in the world. | Stat | Value | | --- | --- | | Women's Super League 2 finish | 8th | | Bay Collective's stake | Majority |
