Sunderland face a tough Carabao Cup test against Brentford at the Stadium of Light on Wednesday, with their Premier League struggles and a likely rotated squad making progress difficult. The Black Cats sit 20th in the Premier League with just five points from eight games, having scored only six league goals all season.

Phil Smith of the Sunderland Echo provided the pre-match analysis. "It’s been just under two months since the last meeting between Brentford and Sunderland at Gtech Community Stadium," he said. "How have things gone since then? In short, it has been very bumpy!"

That 1-1 draw in early September is a distant memory for a side whose recent form reads one win, two draws and two losses in their last five matches across all competitions. Their last outing was a goalless draw at home to Leeds, a result that did little to lift them from the relegation zone. Top scorer B. Brobbey, who has three goals this season, will be hoping for more service.

Defensive frailties a major worry

Sunderland's defensive record is a significant concern, with the team keeping a clean sheet in just 14% of their matches. They have conceded 14 goals in the Premier League already. This weakness is likely to be tested by a Brentford side averaging nearly two goals per game. The Bees are unbeaten in their last five outings and thrashed Birmingham City 6-1 in an earlier round of this competition.

Managerial priorities are also a factor. The club changed its entire starting line-up for its first Carabao Cup match against Hull City, and similar rotation is expected. With European commitments and a critical league position, this competition is the lowest priority.

Ahoka provides a bright spot

One positive has been the form of summer signing Jules Ahoka. The defensive midfielder, signed from Antwerp, has impressed in his cup appearances. "He has been absolutely superb in all of his cup appearances so far," Smith noted.

Sunderland typically play in a 4-3-3 formation, aiming to control possession and defend higher. This approach will need to be near-perfect to contain Brentford's attack. The immediate focus for the club, however, remains the Premier League, with a key trip to face Coventry City looming this weekend.
