Sunderland director of football Florent Ghisolfi has confirmed new signing Malick Fofana is fully fit after a previous ankle injury, ending any concerns about the Belgian winger's condition. The 21-year-old joined the Black Cats on deadline day for a fee of £30 million after a dramatic late transfer tussle with Crystal Palace.

Fofana missed almost five months of the previous season at Lyon due to a right ankle problem. His fitness became a central point in negotiations as both Sunderland and Palace pushed to sign him in the final hours of the window. The two clubs even agreed to a joint medical for the player in France, with private jets from both sides waiting to transport him.

The transfer saga intensified when Crystal Palace, under new manager Pierre Sage, emerged as a rival suitor in the final 24 hours. Sage had previously worked with Fofana at Lyon, first in the youth system and then as head coach. After initially agreeing to join Sunderland, Fofana reportedly switched his preference to Palace following a conversation with his former coach. Financial negotiations and the medical process then became prominent factors before the player ultimately decided to join Sunderland.

Ghisolfi addressed the situation directly. "Me, I need to protect my player and I can say that he has zero issue (physically)," the director of football stated. He added that the club knew Fofana's mentality exactly from their scouting process. "He has a top mentality, and he will fit with Sunderland 100 per cent," Ghisolfi said.

The Belgian winger has already made two appearances for his new club. He came on as a second-half substitute in the Premier League against Brentford last Saturday. Then on Tuesday night, Fofana started and played for 79 minutes in Sunderland's 1-0 Carabao Cup victory over Hull City at home. Chemsdine Talbi scored the winning goal in that match.

Sunderland's current league standing provides context for their ambitions. They sit 12th in the Premier League with 4 points from three games, following a win, a draw and a loss. Their goal difference is exactly zero, having scored and conceded three goals each. They trail leaders Manchester City by five points in the early title race.

The director of football acknowledged the chaotic nature of deadline day dealings. He accepted that such wrangling does not portray professional football in a good light. "We won this this time, maybe we'll lose another time," Ghisolfi commented on the head-to-head battle with Crystal Palace. He said these situations can happen in football and do not give a good image of the industry, but clubs must fight through them.

Ghisolfi also referenced manager Regis Le Bris's emphasis on alignment and commitment within the club. This philosophy appears to have guided their approach in the transfer market. The director confirmed another squad matter, stating that winger Chemsdine Talbi, who was omitted from Sunderland's Europa League squad, will "stay with Sunderland 100 per cent." He described that decision as painful but necessary.

The Black Cats face a significant test this Saturday night when they host Arsenal, who are currently second in the table. Following that Premier League encounter, Sunderland will begin their Europa League campaign next Wednesday at home to Dutch side AZ Alkmaar. This marks their first appearance in UEFA competition since 1973, a major milestone for the club.

Injury news remains part of the squad management picture, with Habib Diarra currently sidelined. The latest team availability is always tracked on our injuries page. With Fofana now integrated and declared fully fit, manager Regis Le Bris has more options as his team prepares for a demanding period of domestic and European football. Sunderland's next match is at home against Arsenal on September 12.
