Sunderland's squad depth faces a severe test after key players Brian Brobbey and Dan Ballard sustained injuries on international duty. The double blow comes as the club handles a congested schedule across three competitions, with head coach Regis Le Bris forced to reshuffle his pack.

Ballard is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines, expected to miss at least a month of action and potentially up to two months. The central defender is unlikely to return before the November international break, which could see him sit out as many as nine matches. Brobbey, the team's top scorer this season with three goals in five appearances, has a hamstring issue but received a more positive prognosis. He is ruled out of Thursday's Europa League group stage game against Torreense but is expected to be available for the Premier League trip to Bournemouth on October 18.

A punishing schedule ahead

The timing of the injuries is particularly problematic. Between now and the mid-November break, Sunderland face eight different opponents. The run includes three Europa League clashes, four Premier League fixtures, and a League Cup fourth-round tie. This stretch will severely test a squad already showing signs of strain, sitting 17th in the Premier League with just four points from six games. Their most recent outing was a 2-0 home defeat to Brighton last Saturday, a result that extended their losing run to two matches.

Former Sunderland chief scout Mick Brown highlighted the scale of the problem. "Sunderland's injury issues are going to be a really big problem for them," Brown said. He added that the club "could be 'in big trouble' if they suffer any more injuries or the duo are sidelined for longer."

The absences expose a perceived lack of Premier League-ready depth in the squad. Ballard's injury leaves a significant gap in the heart of the defence, while Brobbey's temporary loss removes their most potent attacking threat, fresh from a hat-trick against Manchester City last month. Wilson Isidor is among the forward options who may see increased responsibility. The team's current standings position shows the urgency of finding solutions quickly during this difficult period.

Le Bris provided the update on Brobbey's quicker return, offering a sliver of good news. The immediate focus shifts to Thursday's European match without their leading marksman, followed by a key league encounter at Bournemouth, who are one place below them in 18th. The club will be hoping for no further setbacks as they handle this demanding phase of the season with a depleted squad.
