Sunderland are on the verge of completing a major transfer for Belgian winger Malick Fofana from Lyon for a fee just under £30 million. The 21-year-old is travelling to England for a medical and has agreed to a five-year contract with an option for a further year.

This potential club-record signing arrives as Sunderland sit 11th in the Premier League with three points from their opening two matches. They have scored and conceded two goals, leaving them three points behind early leaders Manchester City. Their next challenge is an away trip to face Brentford, who are currently fifth, on September 5th.

Malick Fofana is a 21-year-old Belgian international winger who began his senior career at KAA Gent in July 2022. He made 64 appearances for Gent, scoring five goals and providing ten assists. His form earned him a €17 million move to Lyon in January 2024. Over two-and-a-half years with the French club, he scored 19 goals in 83 total appearances, including two in six games this season. At international level, Fofana made his senior debut for Belgium in October 2024 and has earned five caps, scoring his first goal in a 6-0 World Cup qualifying win against Liechtenstein last September.

Sunderland's pursuit of Fofana signals their ambition following a seventh-place finish in their first season back in the top flight. The club has qualified for the Europa League, their first European campaign in 51 years, and is strengthening the squad accordingly. This summer has already seen the arrivals of defenders Thomas Meunier and Dayann Methalie, midfielder Jules Ahoka, and the impending loan of Austrian defender Kevin Danso from Tottenham. Securing Fofana would be a significant attacking addition for manager Michael Beale as he looks to build on a squad that beat Fulham last Sunday after an opening-day loss at Ipswich.

Sunderland faced competition from Crystal Palace for Fofana's signature. Palace manager Pierre Sage previously coached at Lyon when the club signed the winger. Crystal Palace correspondent Matt Woosnam said: "Bringing in Fofana would be an excellent way to strengthen." Arsenal also attempted to sign the player but, according to their correspondent James McNicholas, "were unwilling to meet Lyon’s asking price." Chelsea made a verbal enquiry last summer, while Everton held talks over a possible move. Sunderland's successful negotiation, understood to be an initial £25.6 million with potential add-ons of £4.3 million, has now put them in pole position.

The Belgian is expected to provide pace and creativity on the flanks for a Sunderland side looking to improve on their early-season form. His arrival, alongside that of Kevin Danso, would complete a busy and ambitious transfer window for the Black Cats. The club's current league position and goal difference show there is room for improvement, and Fofana's direct style could be key in turning performances into points. Fans can track the team's progress in the standings throughout the campaign. With the Europa League group stage draw approaching, adding a player of his calibre is seen as essential for competing on multiple fronts.

Malick Fofana's proposed move to Sunderland is scheduled to be finalised before the team travels to face Brentford on September 5th.
