Sunderland have completed the signing of Belgian winger Malick Fofana from Olympique Lyonnais. The Premier League club agreed a deal worth at least €30 million (£25.7 million) for the 21-year-old, who has passed a medical and signed a five-year contract with an option for a further year.
Fofana arrives as Sunderland sit 11th in the Premier League table with three points from their opening two matches. Their next challenge is an away trip to face Brentford, who are currently fifth, on September 5th.
Malick Fofana is a 21-year-old Belgian international who primarily operates as a left winger. He began his professional career at Gent in his home country before moving to Lyon in January 2024 for a fee between €17 million and €19.5 million. Over two and a half seasons in Ligue 1, he made 83 appearances for Lyon, scoring 19 goals. This campaign, he netted in Lyon's season-opening win over Toulouse and also scored in their UEFA Champions League play-off against Fenerbahce.
At international level, Fofana made his senior debut for Belgium in late 2024. In his first three caps, he has already contributed a goal and an assist.
The signing addresses a clear need for pace and direct attacking threat on the flanks. Sunderland manager highlighted these qualities, saying, "Malick Fofana is a world-class talent with exceptional pace and technical ability, and we are thrilled to have him on board." His ability to take on defenders and contribute goals from wide areas will be vital for a Sunderland side that has scored two and conceded two in the league so far.
Fofana's arrival bolsters the squad depth as the club handles a busy schedule. His versatility to play across the front line offers the manager more tactical options. The club's current attacking resources can be viewed on our squad page.
The significant investment, which includes potential add-ons of €5-6 million, signals Sunderland's ambition to solidify their Premier League status and compete higher up the table. They currently trail early leaders Manchester City by three points. Integrating a player of Fofana's calibre quickly could provide the spark needed to improve results.
Fofana himself is eager to start, stating, "I am delighted to join Sunderland and look forward to giving my all for the club." His immediate focus will be on settling into his new surroundings and competing for a starting role. The winger's five-year contract secures his long-term future at the Stadium of Light as the club builds for the future.
His first opportunity to feature could come in that away fixture against Brentford this weekend.
