Sunderland are in for disappointment in their efforts to sign Timothy Weah this summer. That's according to Foot Mercato, who provide an insight into Sunderland's approach and why a move is unlikely. Sunderland explored bargain deal On Wednesday, Sport Witness covered claims from France that Villarreal and 'especially Sunderland' have shown interest in the 26-year-old. The two clubs have made contact, after being presented an opportunity to sign the American for a bargain deal. Marseille are actively selling players in this window to raise funds and lower their wage bill. Last summer, Timothy Weah arrived from Juventus on loan with an obligation to buy. The Ligue 1 side made his stay permanent for €14m and gave him a contract until 2030. Despite this, he's aware of the possibility of leaving again because of the club's tough economic conditions. Blow for Sunderland The versatile player is attracting interest and the French club need to raise funds. This should make it relatively easy for a sale, but that isn't the case. Last season, the American mainly operated as a right-back and a right wing-back, scoring three goals and contributing four assists from 41 matches. Manager Bruno Génésio particularly appreciates his versatility, profile and 'fighting spirt'. The outlet states: ' 'To imagine the New York native leaving Ligue 1 before the end of the summer transfer window, a club would have to offer him a sporting challenge significantly greater than the one offered by OM [Marseille].' Sunderland and Villarreal's approaches get a mention, and Foot Mercato state Régis Le Bris' side made contact before the start of the World Cup. Timothy Weah hasn't responded to the Black Cats yet and is unlikely to do so. He's aims for a club with ambitions higher than the Premier League side.
