Sunderland U21s manager Matt Craddock has detailed the reasoning behind Aji Alese's recent absence, citing workload management, and highlighted a potential UEFA registration route for the club's academy prospects. The defender missed Monday's 5-1 Premier League 2 win over Nottingham Forest at Eppleton Colliery Welfare after playing 100 minutes against Jong PSV the previous week.

Craddock explained the decision was purely precautionary. "It was just about managing workloads a little bit," Craddock said. "Aji ended up doing 100 minutes against PSV, so with him it was just about managing his workload." Fellow defender Jenson Jones was also held back due to a heavy training load, which allowed Finlay to step in at full-back.

Sunderland's return to European competition this season presents a specific opportunity for homegrown talent. UEFA regulations include a 'B-list' which allows clubs to register an unlimited number of players who are eligible for the competition and have been trained by the club for a certain period, without them taking a spot in the main 25-man squad. This creates a direct pathway for academy players to be involved in matchday squads for the Europa League, which begins its league phase on September 16. The draw for that phase takes place this Friday, August 28.

Craddock believes this, along with domestic cup competitions, gives his players a clear target. "One hundred per cent," he said when asked if youngsters could expect involvement. "They should be looking at opportunities. When is it going to come my way?"

The rapid rise of Sunderland's senior side to the Premier League has widened the gap between under-21 football and the first-team environment. Craddock acknowledged this challenge but stressed a long-term view. "With time is the honest answer," he stated. "When the club have had so much progression in such a short space of time... It is just going to take time."

He emphasised that every training session and match is an audition. "I said to them literally before we walked out today that there is always somebody watching you," Craddock added. "Everything that you do as an under-21 player is an opportunity to show yourself."

The U21s are next in action on Monday when they travel to face Brentford, looking to build on their emphatic Forest victory. Meanwhile, the first team prepares for a busy schedule combining Premier League and European commitments. Fans can track all the key dates on our dedicated fixtures page.
